Back for the Win!

Posted on Mar 06, 2024
Bill Persefield back for the Win from P.E.T.S (President Elect Training Seminar) presents the banner for the 2024-2025 year - "The Magic of Rotary".  RI President-elect Stephanie Urchick celebrates the magic of Rotary. She says members create that magic with every project completed, every dollar donated, and every new member of Rotary. This theme encourages us to recognize and amplify the power of Rotary in saving lives and making a positive impact in our communities and beyond. While we may not have a magical wand, our collective efforts create transformative change. So let’s continue to weave our magic through service, fellowship, and goodwill!

Mosaic's Family Services - Speaker

Mirjana Omeragic, Senior Director of Refugee Services brought an up-close look at Mosaic's Family Services and their Refugee and Family Violence Survivor Programs.  Mirjana emphasized the importance of guiding survivors of human rights abuses through support services, education, and community resources. Their programs assist with various services such as legal counsel, community education, and outreach, but also emergency and transitional housing, clothing, and feeding those in need.  Their clients are victims of family violence, trafficking, refugees, and unaccompanied minors.

Our recent "Roll 'Em Out, Move 'Em Forward" suitcase drive specifically allows those victims to reposition with dignity.  We had a successful project that perhaps we look forward to next year.

New Construction Tour of JJ Pearce High School

It was 'grand'.  The special tour of the new construction sites at JJ Pearce High School had 10 of our Prestonwood Rotary members in awe!  We certainly don't remember a high school like this in our past.  Principal, Carrie Breedlove and  Assistant Principal, LeAndre Benton led us through the new space that opened up this year, including The Commons, a multi-purpose area (shown below), a music area with private practice rooms, and space for band and orchestra practice, graphic design, animation, and science to showcase the students and their work.

We all agree that this was a stellar experience.  We plan to go back after the opening of the new auditorium and other phases.

Roll 'Em Out

During January and February, Prestonwood is working with two other organizations; The National Council of Jewish Women Dallas and The Dallas Founder Lions Club to collect rolling suitcases for Mosaic's Family Services.  This project has met with great success and at our Happy Hour on the 5th Wednesday in January, we gathered at Anayla's Scratch Kitchen to add to our collection.  If you have usable, rolling suitcases, please bring them to a Prestonwood Rotary meeting or send an email to info@prestonwoodrotaryclub.org to arrange pickup.

Interacts on the Road

Interact goes on the road...

The Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy (PTAA) led by Prestonwood's newest member and Interact Sponsor, Margaret Silva, went on the road for the Holidays in the Richardson Christmas parade.  The theme for the parade was "displaced toys".  The Interact students marched alongside of the float while some remained on board, dressed in their "childhood toy" clothes. Margaret marched along side in her Raggedy Ann costume.  The float won both the Major's Trophy and the President's Trophy.  Congratulations!

People of Action - Feed My Starving Children

Members of Prestonwood and one very exceptional spouse poured on the Holiday Spirit on the last day of November at Feed My Starving Children.  Our team built 22 boxes or 4,752 meals for families in need.  This is an event we can all get behind and sometimes we don’t have enough spots to have all of our members involved.  Everyone loves the camaraderie, especially the designer hairnets.

We hope he will be able to keep us straight.  His lovely wife Jennifer, a former teacher, joined us for the induction ceremony on Wednesday.  He is certainly no stranger to Rotary since he comes from a family full of Rotarians.  Please make him welcome!
